JRA Blackbook: Deep Impact’s final crop could contain a star

One of the final foals by mighty sire Deep Impact hit the ground running and a well-bred filly is ready to tackle group races again after a polished performance against older mares.

Light Quantum (R5 Tokyo, Newcomer, 1600m, November 12)

Deep Impact’s final foal crop is made up of just six registered horses and Light Quantum became the second to go to the races, and the second to win, when she led all the way over the tough Tokyo mile.

Light Quantum is out of American G1 winner Illuminant, who Teruya Yoshida bought for US$1.1 million.

There was an unfussed manner in which the way Light Quantum went about her job that made it seem she had been there before; she jumped clean from the widest gate, worked her way to the front and once there relaxed beautifully under Christophe Lemaire.

From there Light Quantum strode smoothly in front to cruise away with the win, Lemaire riding hands-and-heels to the line.

“We can go at our own pace at the beginning of the race,” Lemaire said. “She is easy to ride and I think she has potential.”

Rouge Eveil (R10 Tokyo, Utopia Stakes, Class 3, 1800m, November 13)

The granddaughter of the great 2011 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream looks ready to step back into stakes races after another professional display at Tokyo.

Rouge Eveil wasn’t quite up to the best fillies in the G2 Flora Stakes (Oaks trial) and the Yushun Himba – although she wasn’t disgraced – and has now bounced back with two straight wins at headquarters.

Getting two kilograms off all 14 of her older rivals, Rouge Eveil sat midfield and gave the punters who took 1.8 some nervous moments as she worked through her gears late before nabbing Luz on the line.

Jockey Keita Tosaki was happiest with the tactical speed the filly showed, something she will need if she is to be competitive in middle distance races.

“There were a lot of runners today and it may be difficult for us to get a nice position after jumping out from the gate but she jumped well and we were able to get a good spot,” he said. “I trusted her turn of foot and she accelerated well in the straight and it was a nice win.”
