Form Pointers – Up and comers
Expert analysis from the TechTeam.
The TechTeam examine the chances of three potential new stars. Another Wil, Wymark and Massive Sovereign.
Another Wil a winner of 4 of his 6 starts is still racing in restricted grade having won a BM84 at Flemington last Saturday, he won by 4.5 lengths over the mile and interestingly his full brother has won over 4000m. If his path leads to the Caulfield Cup, even though it is a far cry from Saturday’s class we feel he will be extremely competitive in this event.
Another Wil wins the Good Friday Appeal Plate
Another up and comer Wymark won his maiden at his seventh start and then was strikingly impressive in winning at Newcastle on Saturday by 9.4 lengths. Wymark is entered for the Rosehill Guineas in three weeks time. Having won off a low rating of 63 he is a chance of being balloted out of this event. If he can get his rating up before then we feel he will be in the finish.
Sunday’s Sha Tin meeting saw the emergence of a Derby hopeful from left field namely Massive Sovereign. He was extremely impressive in winning the Class 3 2000m race. In his native Ireland he had no runs past 1600m, yet this PP was able to trounce his opposition at his first look at 2000m.
Massive Sovereign received a TechTeam rating of 115 which compares favourably with Helios Express at 118 in winning the Hong Kong Classic Cup. Interestingly, Massive Sovereign’s TechTeam best rating in Ireland was 107.
One must be wary of PP’s who win at their first start in Hong Kong as many do not back up. However, Massive Sovereign could well have enormous upside. It will be no surprise if he is fighting out the finish in the Hong Kong Derby.
Ryan Moore was riding Massive Sovereign back in Ireland. On Sunday Ryan finished 2nd to him aboard Simple Hedge. It is likely though that Zac Purton will retain the ride.
