Expert analysis from the TechTeam

This week the TechTeam analyse the outstanding performances over the weekend from STORM BOY and NAVAL COLLEGE. Two exciting horses that set the track alight.

 STORM BOY

In winning last Saturday’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic in the fast time of 68.0secs Storm Boy has returned an exceptional TechTeam rating of 132. One of the highest ever TechTeam ratings for a 2Y0 at this time of the season.

To put this in perspective.

Capitalist who won the 2016 Magic Millions/ Golden Slipper double, rated 128 in the Magic Millions.

Sunlight in the 2018 Magic Millions rated 127 and she was a filly with a 2kg allowance. For a colt to be equal with her, he would have to had rated 131 which is comparable to Storm Boy. Sunlight’s true quality shone through as a 3YO when she won the VRC Coolmore Classic, the VRC Newmarket and the MVRC William Reid St all at G1 level.

From this, you can see that Storm Boy is well and truly up to Golden Slipper standard. Storm Boy’s second dam is the Champion NZ mare Seachange. She was NZ Horse of the Year 2006/7 and again 2007/8. The 2008 World Rankings rated her the best mare 4YO+ in the world on turf over 1000-1300m. In that year she won the G1 Telegraph Hcp (1200m) by 3.5L in 1.06.66 carrying topweight of 58.5kg.

NAVAL COLLEGE

On April 1, 1995, Danewin (winner of five G1s) won the Rosehill Guineas and set a course record of 1.59.99 for 2000m. It was his 17th start. This is a time which has stood unchallenged for 28 years. The only time it has been equalled was in the following year when Octagonal won the 1996 Rosehill Guineas at his 14th start. His time reflected the quality of the opposition behind him, Saintly, Nothin’Leica Dane and Filante.

Then last Saturday NAVAL COLLEGE in winning the January Cup (LR) did not just lower this record, he smashed it, producing a 1.59.11, it was only his 12th start. Our TechTeam using ratings based on times has given this horse an extremely high rating of 131. We predict he will be a genuine Group horse with a high probability of rising to G1 level.

NAVAL COLLEGE’s overall record now stands at 12 starts for five wins, four seconds and one third. He was born in GB on 20/3/2019 and although deemed to be a 5YO is still actually a 4YO with his best still to come.
