JRA Blackbook: Three-year-olds bound for bigger things in 2023

A son of cult hero Lani has an overseas campaign on his agenda and an Irish-bred sprinter could shake up the JRA’s sprint ranks next year

Remake (R11 Nakayama, G3 Capella Stakes, 1200m, dirt)

Remake is the first stakes winner for Japan’s beloved oddball dirt star Lani, the winner of the 2016 UAE Derby that subsequently campaigned through the US Triple Crown and finished third in the Belmont Stakes.

This three-year-old colt is bound to head overseas, most likely a sprint in the Middle East in the new year, after spacing rivals at Nakayama.

Jockey Yuichi Fukunaga may not be riding long enough to partner Remake – the veteran jockey earned his trainer’s licence this week.

Fukunaga praised trainer Koichi Shintani for improving the horse’s ability to settle.

“He was not easy to control before,” Fukunaga said. “He stayed in the position that I planned before the race. The farm and stable did a good job and he kept improving in races. He is more easy to control and perform well.”

Mad Cool (R11 Chukyo, Chiryu Stakes, Class 3, 1200m, December 11)

This Irish-bred sprinter by Dark Angel will be one to watch when he enters the top sprint races next year.

Manabu Ikezoe’s three-year-old Mad Cool made it four wins on the bounce and jockey Kota Fujioka was happy with the way the grey finished his race.

“His racing rhythm is good,” Fujioka said. “I was worried he could not find racing room when turning into the straight, but it is lucky that we can find it and he responded very well. He is a very good horse.”
